Checked out i2c with the new factory firmware. It works fine, not seeing the spurious errors I'd seen before with the later kernels. All that's needed is to install i2c-tools and configure i2c-gpio-custom in a similar way to Slackware.
By implication, I suspect w1 is also working perfectly. Another nail in the coffin for BMD!
